Continental AG Announces Tread Depth TPMS Sensor

 

Continental AG has announced that it is developing a new type of tire pressure monitoring sensor capable of detecting tread depth. Continental AG claims that this new type of intelligent TPMS sensor obtains tread depth data based on changes in tire rolling characteristics. If a tire’s tread is run down to below a tire-specific threshold value, the sensor then signals the user that a tire change is due. 

This new TPMS technology may be available in Continental TPMS equipped vehicles by 2017. 

“Legislators all over the world have defined a minimum tire tread depth for safe driving….We are delighted that we will, in future, be able to conveniently read tread depth electronically with the aid of sensors embedded in the tires.”

Schrader Releases 33200 433MHz WAL EZ-Sensor Programmable TPMS

Schrader has added a new feature to its line of EZ-Sensor programming tire pressure monitoring sensors. The Schrader #33200 433MHz wireless auto-locate or “WAL” EZ-Sensor uses a proprietary and patented Schrader technology that supports new OEM designs, as well as adds to EZ-sensor’s ease-of-use and additional platform coverage for the aftermarket.

Wireless auto-locate, or “WAL” is a unique Schrader electronics protocol that allows the vehicle’s TPMS system to automatically locate and identify each TPMS sensor’s specific location. WAL capability has multiple benefits, including allowing the user to bypass performing a TPMS relearn procedure after tire repair, tire change, sensor replacement, wheel rotation, and new winter/summer tire changeovers. The ability to replicate Schrader OEM technology makes the 33200 433MHz WAL EZ-Sensor the first in its class.

TPMS Relearn Procedures: Ford, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury

Here are TPMS relearn procedures for specific Ford, Lincoln, Mazda, and Mercury vehicles factory equipped with the Schrader 20315 rubber valve snap-in tire pressure monitoring sensor.

For Keyed-ignition models:

1) Make sure all tires are inflated to the vehicle’s recommended inflation pressures (found in the owner’s manual on the door placard).

2) Turn the ignition switch to OFF then press and release the brake pedal.

3) Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN (engine OFF) 3 times, ending in the RUN position. Do this within 10 seconds.

4) Press and release the brake pedal.

5) Turn the ignition switch back to OFF.

6) Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN (engine OFF) 3 times, ending in the RUN position. Do this within 10 seconds.

7) The horn should sound letting you know the vehicle has entered into TPMS relearn mode.

8) Place the top of the TPMS triggering tool against the sidewall of the driver’s side front tire in the location of the valve stem. Press the left button, wait until the horn sounds, then press the right button to turn the tool off.

9.) Once the horn sounds, move on to the passenger side front tire and repeat the process. Each tire should only take 30 seconds or less.

10) After the passenger side front tire has been learned, continue on to the passenger side rear tire and finishing with the driver’s side rear tire.

11) You may now turn the ignition to OFF. If the horn does not sound, the sensors were learned successfully. If the horn sounds twice, then the process must be repeated because there was a malfunction.

For Push-button ignition models:

1) Make sure all tires are inflated to the vehicle’s recommended inflation pressures (found in the owner’s manual on the door placard).

2) Make sure the ignition button is OFF then press and release the brake pedal.

3) Push the ignition button three times (once per second). The vehicle should be OFF.

4) Push the ignition button three times (once per second). The vehicle should be OFF.

5) Push the ignition button twice (once per second), then press and release the brake pedal.

6) Push the ignition button once. The vehicle should be OFF.

7) Push the ignition button three times (once per second). The vehicle should be OFF

8) Push the ignition button three times (once per second). The vehicle should be OFF.

9) Push the ignition button twice (once per second). The vehicle should be in RUN mode, engine off.

10) The horn should sound letting you know the vehicle has entered into TPMS relearn mode.
