Original Equipment Manufacturers Choose Direct TPMS

The direct tire pressure monitoring system utilizes wheel mounted sensors that accurately gather pressure and temperature data from the vehicles tires. This data is then interpreted by the vehicles ECU and a potential low tire pressure warning is issued if one or more tires is underinflated by 25% or more.

The indirect, ABS-based TPM system interprets tire pressure data based on the rotational speed of each tire.

So why do original equipment manufacturers choose direct TPMS over indirect? Read on…

Indirect TPMS Problems?

What is Indirect TPMS? What does it do?

An indirect tire pressure monitoring system works with the vehicles ABS (anti lock brake system) to evaluate the tire pressure in each tire. Unlike traditional tire pressure monitoring systems, an indirect tire pressure monitoring system uses wheel sensors to measure the rotational speed of each tire. An indirect system functions based on a single principle: Underinflated tires have a faster rotational speed due to its smaller diameter. Overinflated tires have a slower rotation speed due to its larger diameter.

Under and overinflation are things you want to avoid. So what happens if your TPMS warning light goes off, but your tires are inflated to vehicle specifications? There are a number of factors that can influence the rotational speed of your tires.

How do I reset my Audi Indirect TPMS system?

All Audi models produced in 2011 and up will be equipped with an Indirect TPMS system. What’s the difference from the tire pressure monitoring system that previous Audi models used?

An indirect TPMS system measures tire pressure by monitoring the individual rotational speeds of each tire. For example, a tire that is low on pressure spins at a slower speed than a tire that is filled to factory specifications.

direct TPMS system uses tire pressure sensors mounted in each wheel to take tire pressure readings and then relay those readings back to the vehicles TPMS receiver unit.
